Turning human waste into plastic, nutrients could aid long-distance space travel August 22, 201 Astronauts could someday benefit from recycling human waste on long space trips (photo illustration). Not to worry, you'll simply re-enter your spacecraft and use some microorganisms to convert your urine and exhaled carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) into chemicals to make a new one. That's one of the ultimate goals of scientists who are developing ways to make long space trips feasible. The researchers are presenting their results today at the 254th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS). Astronauts can't take a lot of spare parts into space because every extra ounce adds to the cost of fuel needed to escape Ea...
Sean Michael Jones A World of Tropical Nature Aug 22, 2:10 PM The Colours of the Tropics Soft hazy light is what you need to create great macro images, so if its hot and sticky your half way there, just finish things off with a cool looking subject like this Heliconia, and a background full of sumptuous Bokeh. An image that I captured on a gorgeous morning at the Lake Park, Kuala Lumpur. #photography #landscape #nature #flowers
Light Echoes from V838 Mon What caused this outburst of V838 Mon? For reasons unknown, star V838 Mon's outer surface suddenly greatly expanded with the result that it became the brightest star in the entire Milky Way Galaxy in January 2002. Then, just as suddenly, it faded. A stellar flash like this had never been seen before - supernovas and novas expel matter out into space. Although the V838 Mon flash appears to expel material into space, what is seen in the above image from the Hubble Space Telescope is actually an outwardly moving light echo of the bright flash. In a light echo, light from the flash is reflected by successively more distant rings in the complex array of ambient interstellar dust that already surrounded the star. V838 Mon lies about 20,000 light years away toward the constellation of the unicorn (Monoceros), while the light echo above spans about six light years in diameter. Image Credit: NASA, ESA
Scientists have synthesized new liquid-crystalline photochrom August 21, 2017 LCD texture observed in a polarization-optical microscope. Credit: Alexey Bobrovsky Chemists at the Lomonosov Moscow State University, in collaboration with Czech partners, have synthesized and studied new liquid-crystal photochromic polymers. These polymers combine optical properties of liquid crystals with mechanical properties of polymers. They quickly change molecular orientation under the influence of external fields and form coatings, films and details of complex shape. An important advantage of such systems in comparison with low-molecular-mass liquid crystals is that at room temperature, liquid-crystal polymers exist in a glass-like state, with fixed molecular orientation. Liquid-crystal polymers comprise molecules with high molecular mass, called macromolecules. They are comb-shaped, which implies that photosensitive rigid azobenzene fragments (C 6 H 5 N=NC 6 H 5 ) are attached to t...
music and footballer their strangest moments together
Music and football: their strangest moments together Lupe Fiasco is to be US Soccer's music director, the England squad have released a compilation – here are some of football and music's worst and best collaborations Mark E Smith: at least they didn't make him say 'Hamilton Academicals'. Photograph: James McCauley/Rex Features 1 Lupe Fiasco becomes the music director of US Soccer It being the United States, they don't have pre-World Cup friendlies, they have the "Send-off Series", with Google+ Hangouts with players, public training sessions, invitations to the public to share messages of support via social media, an intriguing event called "Men in Blazers at the Town Hall", and – lest we forget – three games, against Azerbaijan, Turkey and Nigeria. Naturally, that needs a music director. And who better than Chicago MC Lupe Fiasco, who "will be creating Spotify playlists, in collaboration with his DJ ...
